Now days, Most of the people are using substitutes of sugar in most of the food related items such as salad dressings and cereals, in soft drinks, sports drinks and also in TV advertisement for cleaning the teeth. People use these sugar substitutes for losing their weights and diabetic patients use them to have flavours of sweets even without taking sugar. All of these consumers of sugar substitutes think that they are safe. However, this perception of people is entirely wrong.

In fact, sugar substitutes consumed by overweight and diabetic consumers may produce many adverse effects to their health. As per the reports of Food and Drug Administration (FDA), most of the artificial sweeteners will increase the levels of insulin found in the human body. This high level of insulin will make the human body resistant. This means that human beings because of high level of insulin cannot able to know when they have to stop eating. FDA has highlighted one of the dangerous artificial sweeteners as acesulfame potassium. Acesulfame potassium is a sugar substitute, which gives approximately 200 times sweet taste than sugar. This is actually one of the products of acetoaceic acid and can be manufactured from a propellant agent known as methyl chloride. As per the reports revealed from FDA, acesulfame potassium may cause lung and breast tumours and even may cause blood cancer or leukaemia. In addition, this artificial sweetener may reduce the blood sugar level of human body and may result in overeating of people.

Food and Drug Association (FDA) has highlighted another harmful sugar substitute as Saccharine. Saccharine is one of the derivatives of coal tar, which is approximately 600 times sweet in taste than sugar. Some of the health experts have revealed that consumers of artificial sweeteners should strictly avoid using saccharine as this is one of the harmful substances, consumption of which may cause breathing related problems and headaches.

Neotame is one more substitute of sugar, which is approximately 10,000 times sweet in taste than sugar. This is actually a synthetic variation of aspartame. Neotame consists of aspartic acid, phenylalanine and methanol. As per the reports of FDA and other health experts, Neotame is also a dangerous artificial sweetener, which may lead to various neurological disorders.

Lastly, Aspartame is also one of the substitutes of sugar, which consist of phenylalanine and aspartic acid. This is approximately 190 times sweet in taste than sugar, which may break down in to harmful toxins in the body of human beings. This sugar substitute may lead to neuroendocrine and neurological, breathing and respiratory problems, lymphoma and even memory loss.
